I designed custom machining fixtures for aluminum components, addressing clamping strategy, tool clearance, tolerance stack-up, and repeatability. I also designed and manufactured a quality control jig to measure concentricity on threaded attachments.
Fixture design is primarily a tolerance stack-up problem. Each additional clamp location improves rigidity but introduces another potential source of error, and clamping force sufficient to hold the part can also deflect it. Inspection tooling carries a stricter requirement, since a jig that is not repeatable produces measurements that appear valid but are not.
The quality control jig improved inspection accuracy and reduced measurement variability across repeated concentricity checks.
